JACK DONOHUE PUBLIC SCHOOL
Kanata, Ontario

Jack Donohue Public School is a 5,080 square-metre building that accommodates students in kindergarten to grade 8.

The functional components, such as the administration area, the library/resource centre, the general purpose room, and the two wings of classrooms, are organized around a centrally-located entrance lobby. The classroom wings are zoned according to age groups. Kindergarten and primary classrooms form the "south wing"; the junior classrooms and special education rooms form the "north wing".

Interior design elements, such as the composition of display cases, decorative floor patterns, natural light, and colour schemes, enhance the students' sense of vision during their day at school. Glazed accent blocks and brick patterns, introduced on the exterior building facades, create playful rhythms and reduce the massing of the walls. Each building component has its own recognizable image that fosters the students’ sense of place.
