EDUCATIONAL

ÉCOLE ÉLÉMENTAIRE JEANNE SAUVÉ
Cumberland, Ontario

École Jeanne Sauvé incorporates elementary and intermediate programs as well as a child care centre. The school is located in a residential neighbourhood in the Township of Cumberland, and is connected to adjacent parkland by sports facilities and playgrounds. The school was designed cost-effectively, and accommodates educational and community activities. The School Board developed the school as a joint venture with the Township of Cumberland.

The key element of this building design is a centrally-located atrium that serves as a focal point, and connects major school function areas such as the administration, library, cafeteria, gym, and three wings of classrooms. Designed as the "childrens' castle", the friendly character of the elevations is created by soft brick colours and astraglaze patterns that are continued in the atrium.
