EDUCATIONAL

STEWART ELEMENTARY
Perth, Ontario

The Stewart Elementary School is located on 17 acres in the historic community of Perth, Ontario. The project includes the demolition of the existing school, incorporation of an existing municipal swimming pool, and construction of a new elementary school. Consultation with community and city planners provided a solution that respects the community use of the existing pool and pedestrian access, and conserves and protects the site's natural features.

The design of the school, positioned in the most north-west corner, maximizes sun exposure. The simple formality of the site plan organizes circulation. The L-shaped plan creates a safe, south-facing playground adjacent to the Tay River, and separates the students from the staff parking and bus drop-off areas. The monumental front entrance leads to a central 1 ½ storey lobby with clerestory windows. The clerestory light well, reminiscent of the lanterns seen on many of Perth's historical buildings, provides natural light and ventilation. Each classroom utilizes large, operable, glass windows.

The music program required a full stage. The gymnasium and the stage are accessible directly from the music room. A central lobby, secure after hours, can be used as a reception area during evening performances. The main corridors and two main entrances provide the required direct supervision of students and visitors.
