Hope Cemetery - Cimetière de l'Espoir

Ottawa, Ontario

Archdiocese of Ottawa

Hope Cemetery, Cimetière de l'Espoir, is situated along Highway 31 in Ottawa South. The Cemetery consists of a series of buildings constructed on fifty acres of land. These buildings include an administrative building, a chapel, a mausoleum, a crematorium, and a maintenance compound. The mausoleum and chapel are located at the symbolic heart of the burial grounds. The Mausoleum provides permanent entombment in crypts, and inurnment of cremated remains in niches. The plan of the Mausoleum is symmetrical around two axes, and features a grand central hall, highlighted with decorative floor-to-ceiling glazing at both ends. Portuguese marble and a cedar ceiling are featured throughout the spacious interior. The exterior is clad with Canadian granite and ornamental precast elements.

The Chapel, classical in its design, provides funerary services, and features a series of ceiling vaults. Throughout the building, stained glass infills decorate exterior windows. Similar to the mausoleum, the building material for the chapel's exterior is Canadian granite.
